Ben Thanh Market Has Been Recognized as City-level Heritage Site
At the heritage recognition ceremony held on November 22nd in Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Thanh Market was proudly awarded the certificate and decision for its classification as a city-level heritage site in 2024.
This is the first time in over 110 years that Ben Thanh Market has been recognized as a city-level historical and cultural heritage site. This event is both a pride and a testament to the rich history, culture, and art that the structure has preserved over the years.
With this achievement, the city’s leadership commits to continuing efforts to preserve the market in a systematic and scientific manner, while maintaining the original architectural details to the maximum extent. At the same time, the city will intensify various promotional activities to introduce the beauty of Ben Thanh Market to both domestic and international tourists.
Ben Thanh Market is one of the most iconic landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City, attracting both domestic and international tourists. The name “Ben Thanh” originated from its initial location on the banks of the Ben Nghe River, near a wharf that served as a gateway for soldiers and civilians entering Gia Dinh Citadel.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the French rebuilt Ben Thanh Market at its current location between 1912 and 1914. The southern gate features an iconic clock. In front of the main entrance (southern gate) is Ben Thanh Market Roundabout, also known as Dien Hong Square or Quach Thi Trang Square.
In addition to Ben Thanh Market, four other sites have also been officially recognized as city-level heritage sites, including the HCM City Customs Department Headquarters, District 1 People’s Committee Headquarters, the Temple of Saint Tran Hung Dao and Tomb of Minister Tran’s Family Overseer.
