Lao Than – The Balcony of Y Ty

Nicknamed “the rooftop balcony of Y Ty,” Lao Than rises to 2,862 meters and offers one of the best cloud-hunting experiences in all of Vietnam. It’s also considered one of the easier climbs among the high peaks, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers looking for a light but rewarding journey.

The trail is scenic, with stretches of pine forest, grassy hills, and panoramic viewpoints. From the summit, you can often see a spectacular sea of clouds rolling below, especially in the dry season from October to December. Each time of year brings its own magic:

  • September to November: Prime time for cloud hunting
  • December to January: A rare chance to see the mountains dusted with snow
  • February to May: Spring paints the landscape with peach blossoms and fills the air with the scent of fresh mountain fruits

Lung Cung – The Remote Beauty of Tram Tau

A hidden treasure in Yen Bai province, Lung Cung mountain reaches 2,913 meters and is known for its remote location, dramatic terrain, and stunning highland atmosphere. It’s a mountain that demands endurance, with steep, narrow trails and weather that changes by the hour.

Yet Lung Cung remains a favorite among experienced trekkers looking to escape crowded trails. The journey to Lung Cung takes you through some of the most scenic and well-known destinations of the Northwest, including Khau Pha, Che Cu Nha, Thao Chua Chai, Mu Cang Chai, and the picturesque Ta Co Y Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass charming villages and breathtaking landscapes that capture the true spirit of the region.

Be sure to stop by Lung Cung village, home to over 3,000 ancient Tao Meo trees, their sweet, fragrant fruit ripening and scenting the mountain breeze.

Sa Mu – Sunset Gold in the Forest

Nestled quietly in the highlands of Tay Giang District, Quang Nam, Sa Mu forest is a hidden gem still largely unknown to mass tourism. The name “Sa Mu” comes from the tall evergreen trees that dominate this ancient forest, creating a canopy of silence and mystery.

What makes Sa Mu truly unforgettable is the light. If you time your trek right, especially in the late afternoon, you’ll witness the forest bathed in golden sunset hues, with rays of light streaming through the tall trees and fog-draped undergrowth. December to February is perfect for cloud chasers, while March to April brings the forest to life with blossoms in full bloom.

This forest is ideal for moderate treks, nature photography, and cultural immersion with the local Co Tu ethnic community. It’s not about conquering a peak here, it’s about slowing down and soaking in the stillness.

Nhiu Co San – A Path Through Clouds and Solitude

Hidden in Y Ty commune, Lao Cai province, Nhiu Co San stands tall at 2,965 meters, Vietnam’s ninth highest peak. Its name comes from its shape, said to resemble a pair of buffalo horns (“Nhìu Cồ San” in H’Mong). The trail winds through quiet villages, mossy forests, bamboo groves, and windswept meadows. And for much of the trek, you’ll be walking through the clouds, quite literally.

Nhiu Co San is best trekked in Spring (January to March) or Winter (October to January) when the weather is cool and clear. On lucky days, you’ll catch a glimpse of the surrounding mountain sea from the summit, often blanketed in a thick layer of white cloud.

It’s not just the landscapes that make this trek special. The route gives you a close look at the life of Hmong and Ha Nhi communities who farm the land in age-old traditions, offering a rare window into highland culture.

Ta Chi Nhu – The Land of Chi Pau Blossoms

Standing at 2,979 meters, Ta Chi Nhu is often dubbed the “Windy Queen of the Northwest.” Located in Yen Bai, it’s one of the windiest peaks in Vietnam, with open ridgelines and panoramic views that make you feel like you’re walking through the sky.

But what really makes Ta Chi Nhu famous is its seasonal bloom of chi pau flowers in October and November. These purple wildflowers blanket the hillsides, creating a dreamlike scene that’s a magnet for photographers and nature lovers alike.

The trek itself is moderately difficult but extremely rewarding. Because much of the trail is open terrain, the views are uninterrupted, vast skies, sweeping clouds, and sunlit valleys in every direction.

Many trekkers camp near the summit to catch both sunset and sunrise, making this not just a trek, but an overnight journey into one of the most ethereal landscapes in Vietnam.

Pu Ta Leng – The Land of Rhododendron Blossoms

Often referred to as the “second roof of Indochina,” Pu Ta Leng stands at an impressive 3,049 meters above sea level in Lai Chau province. While not as famous as Fansipan, Pu Ta Leng is beloved by seasoned trekkers for its raw, pristine nature and challenging routes.

The best time to conquer Pu Ta Leng is from March to May, when the mountains are awash with the vivid colors of rhododendron in full bloom. The sight is surreal: thick carpets of pink, purple, and white flowers cover the trails and hillsides, giving the entire area a fairytale-like quality. Avoid June to August, as the rainy season makes paths wet and slippery.

The trek itself is intense, with steep ascents and dense forest, but the reward is well worth it. At the summit, clouds swirl beneath your feet and the distant mountain peaks stretch endlessly across the horizon. On a clear day, you can even spot Bach Moc Luong Tu, Ngu Chi Son, and the majestic Phan Xi Pang in the distance.
