Da Lat and Hoi An were officially recognized as UNESCO Creative Cities 2023
On the afternoon of October 31st 2023, Hoi An and Da Lat officially joined UNESCO’s Global Creative Cities Network.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was established in 2004 with the goal of strengthening cooperation between recognized creative cities, considering this a strategic element for sustainable development in all fields: economic, social, and environmental. To date, this network has 350 member cities from 90 countries and territories.
As it is an honor to praise two of the most-visited destinations of Vietnam get to be a part of this prestigious list.
Nameingly, Da Lat was recognized for its efforts in the field of music and Hoi An in the field of crafts and folk arts. Notably, this is not the first time that one of the cities of Vietnam had the opportunity to join this exquisite title, as Hanoi – Vietnam’s capital city was one of 66 cities that were designated by UNESCO in early November as Creative Cities in various categories in 2019.
In Hoi An, the field of crafts and folk arts is a strength to preserve and promote heritage values. Hoi An currently has 5 traditional craft villages with nearly 50 active handicrafts such as carpentry, pottery, lantern craft, bamboo and coconut craft, garments, leather making, etc. Among these are three craft villages and one traditional craft recognized as national intangible heritage.
The ecosystem of craft villages, craft village communities, and the customs of local residents have contributed to the formation of many types of folk art, such as Ba Trao singing, Khoan singing, Bai Choi singing, poetry, Ve singing, Boi singing, etc. This is an opportunity for Hoi An to expand its relationship, increase opportunities to cooperate, and access and absorb good values from international experts, and other cities.
Becoming a member of a global creative network is an honor and a great opportunity to position and promote a brand. New Creative Cities recognized by UNESCO will strive to implement the stated commitments and cooperate with other members of the network to promote measures to deal with global challenges such as climate change, increasing inequality, rapid urbanization, etc.
